Things To Do When Buying A House In Milwaukee

Buying a house can be one of the most exciting purchases people can make. But it can also be a huge headache if not done properly.

Spring is right around the corner and this typically means home sales are about to explode.

After a long, frozen Milwaukee winter, this is the time when SOLD signs start popping up everywhere in the neighborhood.

No one wants to move when you’re in the middle of January, but come March and April, look out.

Below are the 9 most important tasks to accomplish when moving in to a new home.

1.) Change The Locks

This should probably be the first thing you do when taking ownership to the property. You never know who may have had keys to the house at one point.

Not only the previous owners but anyone they may have provided keys to in the past as well. Swapping these out and taking care of this first is probably the most important thing you can do.

This will provide total peace of mind when accomplished.

2.) Deep Clean On The Inside

Once this is over you will feel so much better. Odds are the house is pretty clean before the sale took place, but you’d be surprised and will feel like you’re starting with a clean slate afterwards.

Vacuum everywhere and wash all of the windows on the inside. If you have carpeting, consider hiring a carpet cleaning service to get the carpet as clean as possible.

They will typically achieve much greater results than what a rented carpet cleaner will accomplish.

Plus, properly cleaning carpet and giving it a very thorough deep clean can take a ton of time. A professional carpet cleaning company can do it in a fraction of the time.

3.) Exterior Cleaned & Pressure Washed

Considering we are a pressure washing company you probably knew this was going to be on the list lol. But this is one of the single greatest things you can do when first buying a house.

Occasionally this can be a DIY job but may not be the best option when moving in due to the amount of things you have to do.

This can be a big time consumer without the proper equipment. A lot of times you can feel overwhelmed when buying a house with stuff to do and spending hours upon hours trying to clean the outside of your house can be frustrating.

The last thing you want to do with a hundred tasks to accomplish is spend hours getting dirty trying to wash your house. And similar to the carpet cleaning, the results will probably be nothing compared to hiring a professional pressure washing company.

Coming home to your new house after it has been professionally cleaned on the exterior is a great feeling. Day after day you’ll be reminded just how good of a decision it was to make that purchase.

If your house needs to be washed or the driveways, patio, roof or concrete are looking dirty, consider hiring us.  We’ll make sure your house is looking it’s absolute best.

4.) Paint The Walls

Unless you absolutely love the current colors, painting the interior walls can dramatically change the house for the better when buying a house. If trying to save money and you do not plan on hiring it out, doing a room one at a time in your free time is usually the best approach.

Try not to get overwhelmed and take it one step at a time. Before you know it the interior walls will look exactly how you want them and you’ll love your new house that much more.

This is one of the easiest ways to radically change the appearance of the house and it can be completed pretty reasonably if you’re willing to spend some time painting.

5.) Get Furnace/AC Tuned Up

Changing your furnace filter is a very easy task and should not take more than 5 minutes to do. This will ensure your furnace is running efficiently and not wasting money. These can easily be bought off Amazon or Ebay and the current filter should provide the info for ordering.

Unless your furnace and A/C are brand new, it’s also a good idea to call a heating and air company and have them come out for a tune up after buying a house. This is usually pretty reasonable and they can diagnose any issues fairly quickly.

They specialize this kind of work and have the ability to point out something that an inspector may have missed on their report. Having a tune up and overall check done by a professional can save a lot of money in the long run and prevent early failures.

6.) Check Smoke Detectors

The last couple of years the real estate market in Milwaukee has soared to all time highs. Most times a home inspection will catch this if a house is lacking or has any non operational smoke detectors.

If you’re buying a house without a home inspection, it is very wise to make sure all of these are working properly. It’s a rather simple task for something that can potentially be so serious.

7.) Clean Out The Dryer Vent

Clogged dryer vents are one of the leading causes of house fires every year. Luckily this is not a difficult task to do and should not take very long.

For $30, this tool is pretty incredible. It makes vent cleaning a breeze and simply attaches to the end of a drill. If you notice it is taking a little longer to dry your clothes, this is usually the culprit.

8.) Locate Main Water Valve And Breaker

These two components are extremely important to a house and you need to know where they are located in case something goes wrong. Having a leak and not knowing where to shut the water off to the house can be a nightmare.

Locating this upon moving in to a new home will be a huge relief and should be one of the first things you do.

Typically in Milwaukee both of these will be located in the basement. Not always but it is very common.

Getting to know where the main electrical panel is located is a great idea. Typically it’s a big gray box in the basement. If power goes out at night and you do not know where this is located, it will be quite frustrating.

Buying a house Summary

Taking care of these 8 things when buying a house will surely start your new home ownership journey off on the right foot. After all of these are completed you’ll have a greater sense of pride, knowledge, and peace of mind.

Most can be done by yourself but if you want to save time and energy, they can easily be hired out as well.
